First, a confession. I did not make this. I helped Charlie make it. And by "helped" I really mean "watched." It's amazing though. So easy and deceivingly simple.

Saltine Toffee via

One word of warning - do not let your caramel burn. Err on the side of underdone. It goes from golden to black really quickly. We learned this the hard way.


40 saltine crackers

1/2 cup (one stick) unsalted butter

1 cup brown sugar

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

Extra saltine crackers (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a cookie sheet with tin foil. Place saltine crackers on the sheet in a single layer of neat rows.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine butter and sugar, bringing to a boil. Let boil for three minutes or until just beginning to caramelize. Pour immediately over crackers, spreading to cover completely.
  3. Bake for five to six minutes. Remove from oven and immediately cover with chocolate chips. Let sit for a few minutes to melt, then spread chocolate evenly. Sprinkle extra crumbled saltine crackers on top to garnish. Cool completely before breaking into pieces.
